How to evaluate in higher education
Nowadays the most modern curricula are competence-based. This means that the competences of education are defined when designing the curriculum. Naturally, national and international competences shall be taken into consideration.
The curriculum-specific competences are found through anticipating, benchmarking, reasearching in co-operation with the staff, students, and the surrounding world.
When the chosen competences for the future are there, they shall be organized in various levels. This work needs a lot of logical thinking and ability see categories. What is superior and what is inferior?
There are two types of competences, professional that are related to a subject, and meta-competences that are transferable. Examples on meta-competences are people skills, team-work skills, project-management skills.
When the curriculum and the study modules or courses are planned the evaluation criteria need to be written so that they are transparent and clear to all. The competences are manifested in behavior, attitudes, knowledge, and skills. Here it is vital to be down-to-earth. The competences shall be turned to activities that can be evaluated by the lecturer, peers, and the student himself/herself or even an outsider from the work-life.
It is great if the chosen competences help students to orient towards work-life. This is how they get wanted and valuable feedback where they are strong and where there is development to do.
